First Post

So, I thought it would be cool to call my blog The Urban Experience, as I remembered it being a popular book, though I couldn't remember whether it was by Harvey or Lefebvre. After a quick google search, I realized it was by Harvey. It's not like it really matters though, as they both write about a lot of the same things (eg. the relationship between the economy, government, society, the urban and the individual, and how each of these influences each other). However, I've generally preferred David Harvey, as I find Lefebvre's stuff to be somewhat disconnected from reality and a bit too philosophical for my tastes. Harvey's grounding in economics and his use of actual facts to back up his points rather than the vague historicization used by Lefebvre make him a lot easier to read and understand, as well as a lot more relevant for me. However, I may still try to get into Lefebvre again despite having a lot of problems getting into his stuff last summer.

Anyway, I hope to post to this blog about once a week about important issues in urban planning and planning theory and how they relate to my own experience and opinions. There will also be a lot of images on here. Also, to make this thing a bit less boring than a purely academic blog, I'll probably use a bit more humour than is usually seen in most academic blogs put out by university professors.
